My thoughts for this New Year have been brought forth by my adaptation of the St Francis Prayer and a quotation from Lao Tzu, from the book Tao Te Ching .
The St Francis Prayer
Make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me show love; where there is injury, let me make amends; where there is doubt, may I have faith; where there is despair, fill me with hope; where there is darkness, may I look for the light; where there is sadness, may I embrace joy. Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to seek to console another. Or ask to be understood, as to work towards understanding another person. Or to want to be loved, as to reach out to love another. For it is in giving, that I may receive, it is in pardoning, that I may be forgiven, and it is in embracing that fact I will die, that I can let go of the fear of death and embrace life.
-adapted from a prayer written by St. Francis of Assisi
If you understand others, you are smart. If you understand yourself, you are illuminated. If you overcome others, you are powerful. If you overcome yourself, you have strength. If you know how to be satisfied, you are rich. If you can act with vigor, you have a will. If you don’t lose your objectives, you can be long-lasting. If you die without loss, you are eternal.
